The Congress is the national voice of the labour movement, but we speak for all workers and their families, in Canada and beyond. The majority of national and international unions in Canada belong to the Congress, and the CLC includes 12 provincial and territorial federations, and 137 district labour councils. We represent 2.5 million unionized workers.
It is up to every worker to ensure that he or she is being treated fairly, and to look out for abuses in the workplace that affect the rights of others. WorkRights gives you a chance to access the latest information on the labour codes to your province, and to compare practices in your region with those of other provinces and territories in Canada.
The Ontario Federation of Labour is the province's "house of labour", or central labour body. Just as workers unite in a union to protect their rights, so also do unions unite in central labour bodies to further their aims and objectives. From its inception in 1957, the OFL has grown to represent 650,000 Ontario workers in more than 1,500 affiliated local unions.
The Ontario Federation of Labour has developed this site based on all the promises that Premier Dalton McGuinty made to the Federation directly and promises that are listed in the Liberal Party platform.
We envision hazard-free workplaces that prevent work-related injury, illness and death and promote the well-being of workers, their families, communities and the earth, which sustains us all. This is our hope for the world. It will be attained when we recognize the peril we face, the power we hold and the lifelong necessity of working together for our vision.

Unions Represented on our Executive

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is Canada’s largest union. With more than half a million members across Canada, CUPE represents workers in health care, education, municipalities, libraries, universities, social services, public utilities, transportation, emergency services and airlines.
The Ontario Division of CUPE is a voluntary association of CUPE locals in Ontario representing over 180,000 members. Its purpose is to support the objectives of the national union within the province.

The CAW is the largest private sector union in Canada. The CAW is always engaged in campaigns and issues aimed at improving the lives of workers nationally and around the world.

The USWA is 1.2 million working and retired members throughout the United States and Canada, working together to improve our jobs; to build a better future for our families; and to promote fairness, justice and equality both on the job and in our societies. Our members work in just about every sector of the North American economy, from metals and mining and manufacturing, to health care and various services in both the public and private sectors.
CEP is one of the largest unions in Canada, representing just about every type of worker. CEP represents workers in pulp and paper mills, telephone companies, in the oil, gas, chemical, mining and aerospace industries. We are also printers, journalists, radio and TV broadcasters, graphic artists, hotel workers, computer programmers, truck drivers, nurses -- you name it, CEP members do it.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) represents 65,000 people teaching and working in public elementary schools in Ontario.

Coalition for Social Justice Everyone deserves an adequate standard of living - but one in six people in Ontario lives in poverty. We deserve better: it's time for a raise! Across the province, people are joining the Living Wage - Living Income campaign to demand raises to the minimum wage and social assistance rates.
Ontario Health Coalition Stop the privatization of health care. The Ontario Liberal Government is carrying on the Tory plan to develop public-private partnerships in hospitals. Say NO to P3 hospitals.
Council of Canadians

Founded in 1985, The Council of Canadians is Canada's pre-eminent citizens' watchdog organization, comprised of over 100,000 members and more than 70 Chapters across the country. The Guelph chapter of the COC has a web site here.

Strip Search Seven In November 1997, seven women were arrested during a demonstration against Tory education policies at the Guelph Holiday Inn. The Guelph police held them without charge and sent them to the Wellington detention centre where all inmates are routinely strip-searched. In the early winter of 1998, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) called upon both the Guelph city council and police services board to provide for an independent review of the way their police had handled these women.
